Researchers at North Dakota State University found people who wrote about upsetting periods in their life became healthier. Julia Cameron uses daily journal writing as a foundation of her popular program, "The Artists Way" to stimulate creativity. Many counselor training programs use a program of daily journal writing and monthly summaries to help trainees work through their own issues before helping others with their challenges.
Perhaps the expression "talk is cheap" reflects how easy it is to say something without thinking or really believing. Talk leaves no trace of what has been said, and is easily forgotten. When we write, we have a concrete map of where we have been and where we want to go.
Sending notes back and forth with a coach, is like mapping unknown dense territory that you want to explore. As you try different paths or ideas, you note what paths are efficient and which ones are dead ends or too difficult. From different vantage points, your perspective can shift. As you fill in the blank parts of your map, the best route to take becomes clearer. Similarly, in reading over your notes, patterns emerge that clarify your best direction .

After teaching for eleven years, I completed a Masters in Counseling Psychology in Victoria, Canada. Here I studied Jungian therapy and gained experience in a supervised setting at Divorce Lifeline, leading support groups, at a holistic health center, and at Citizen's Counseling Center.
